Victory is on the Other Side of Failure, 4/02/2010

Victory is on the Other Side of Failure
Glynnis Whitwer

"The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.'"
Matthew 28:5-6a (NIV)

Devotion:
Told by a teacher he was too stupid to learn: Thomas Edison

Fired from his job at a newspaper because he didn't have good ideas: Walt Disney

A music teacher told him he had no hope as a composer: Beethoven

Falsely accused, arrested, killed: Jesus Christ

The disciples of Jesus must have been shattered that Friday. For three years they followed the man from Nazareth. They watched Him heal the sick, restore sight to the blind, and even raise people from the dead. When Jesus said, "I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness" (John 12:46, NAS), they got it. Darkness enveloped the hearts of their countrymen. They needed a "Light."

Twelve ordinary men abandoned everything to follow Jesus: jobs, family, and homes. Not with regret, but with hope. Hope for the promise Jesus offered. Look where it got them that Friday. Good Friday, we call it now. But it was anything but good to them. Jesus was dead - they'd witnessed the crucifixion. Only 11 now, they must have gathered that night after scattering throughout the city. Other followers joined them to mourn the death of the man they loved, and the death of the hope He offered.

On Saturday, they still gathered. No one left - though they could have. They could have packed up their things and put this failed adventure behind them. Back to fishing, back to family, back to normal. But no one left. In spite of what appeared to be complete failure of this new kingdom, everyone stayed. Faithful.

Saturday inched forward to noon, dusk, and then evening. The beauty of the night sky didn't ease their pain. Perhaps they reminisced some. In hindsight, Jesus wasn't really what they were expecting. When the prophets of old foretold a king would come to rescue them, they figured it would be someone imposing, with power, maybe with chariots to whip their enemies into submission. Some took longer than others to readjust their expectations. But when God opened their eyes to the beauty of His plan, they bought into it with their lives.

I'm sure troubled thoughts stole their sleep that Saturday night. Finally, in complete exhaustion their tired bodies overtook their worried minds. Sunday morning dawned. I imagine some woke up hoping it was all a bad dream. Then reality settled in, like heavy summer storm clouds. Jesus was still dead.

Two women got ready first and went to the tomb. Expecting to find the body of their beloved Savior, God treated them instead to a display of His power. With a violent earthquake shaking the ground, an angel of the Lord came from heaven, rolled back the stone covering the tomb and sat down on the rock. Hello!

The angel looked at the women, and spoke words that transformed them from hopeless to hope-filled: "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee" (Matthew 28:5-7a, NIV).

Can you even imagine the celebration? It had only looked like failure. Instead, it was glorious victory! Hope wasn't dead. Jesus was alive! The disciples learned a lesson they would never forget: When God is involved, things aren't always what they seem.

Today we see problems and failures with the same eyes as the disciples. Even knowing that God is able to do things beyond what we can imagine, when we look at a "failure," we often only see an ending. God, however, sees an opportunity for a new beginning. As we celebrate Easter, may that truth nestle itself into our heart. With God all things are possible. He is risen!

Dear Lord, my heart is filled with thanksgiving and praise for You. How can I begin to thank You for sending Jesus, and for His sacrifice for me? Thank You also for the lesson that nothing is too big for You. Help me remember that truth when I'm facing what looks like failure. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Application Steps:
Have you had any "failures" in your life? Pick one that sticks out to you. Identify how God used that situation to open another door in your life, or redirect your path to something better. Then thank Him for His goodness.

Reflections:
From God's perspective, what is true failure?

When you have failed in the past, what have people done or said that was most helpful to you at that time?

Power Verses:
Luke 18:27, "Jesus replied, 'What is impossible with men is possible with God.'" (NIV)

Isaiah 40:31, "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (NIV)

Taking Every Thought Captive 4/01/2010

Taking Every Thought Captive
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth

"We are destroying speculation and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB).

Friend To Friend

Several years ago, my family went on an excursion out West. We flew to Nevada, rented a car, and then proceeded to log in 2500 miles in ten days. One of our stops was Jackson Hole, Wyoming - cowboy country.

On Saturday night, we attended the local rodeo. There we sat, three city slickers among whoopin' hollerin' locals. The cowboys' skills entertained and amazed those of us who thought a Bronco was a 4-wheel drive. Cowboys, young and old, rode bucking broncos, raced around barrels, and conquered angry bulls. But the most thrilling event was the lassoing contest.
We all sat on the edge of our seats as the cowboy waited, poised in his saddle, anticipating the calf's release from the chute. The corral door swung open and the calf burst from the gate. The cowboy exploded through a second door with lasso in hand, and pursued the bucking, twisting, galloping animal. He lassoed the calf's neck; threw him to the ground; quickly wrapped the rope around his legs; tied them securely in place; and immediately jumped up and raised his arms in victory. As the victor stood receiving his applause, his trained steed took three steps backward to secure the rope in place.

The timer continued to run for a few seconds to make sure the calf was indeed captive. Then the cowboy's time was posted on the scoreboard. Time and time again, cowhands lassoed little calves, secured their captives, and raised their hands in victory. Only a few times did a calf escape the rope and make his way out the door on the other end of the corral.

I'll admit that I was feeling a bit sorry for the little calves, even though they were released as soon as the time was logged. The first time one escaped the lasso, I applauded wildly. Angry onlookers let me know with a glare that cheering for the calf was not acceptable. As I continued to watch the contest, the Lord prodded my mind and told me to look and learn. Suddenly it hit me. This event was a perfect picture of what Paul described in today's truth.

Those calves reminded me of wild and wooly thoughts that burst forth from the stable of my mind at times: negative, rebellious, fearful, angry, worrisome, jealous, degrading thoughts that are untamed and unruly, bucking, jumping and running wild across pleasant plains. And my reaction should be like the cowboy's: ride up hot on the thought's heels, lasso it with the truth, tie it up securely, and throw it in the dust. My response should be just like the cowboy's trusty trained horse who, automatically, because of practice, takes three steps backward to make sure the deceptive thought "ain't goin' nowhere."

Trained because of practice. Taking every thought captive. Yes siree. Let's lasso those thoughts little sister, tie ‘em up, and throw em' back in the dust where they came from in the first place. Then we can raise our arms in victory with all the heavenly hosts applauding in victory. And believe me, the faster we do it, the better.

Over the next four days, we will look at four simple steps to taking every thought captive. My prayer is that you will put these steps into practice in your own life and light up the scoreboard with victory in lassoing those run-away thoughts.

See you tomorrow!

Let's Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, sometimes my thoughts run wild. I believe things are true when they aren't and don't believe things are true when they are. Help me to take every thought captive that is not of You. Fill me with Your Truth.
In Jesus' Name, Amen

Now It's Your Turn

When is the last time you had a run-away thought?

At what point did you realize the thought was not of God?

Look up Philippians 4:8 and meditate on this litmus test for our thoughts.

Whose Report Will you Believe? 3/31/2010

Whose Report Will You Believe?
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"We should go up and take possession of the land," they said, "for we can certainly do it…If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us" (Numbers 13:30, 14:8 NIV).

Friend To Friend
This month, I've been talking a lot about faith. Believing God…it's what takes us into our personal Promised Land. In the Old Testament, God brought the Israelites out of the bondage of Egyptian slavery. Moses led the people under the blood-stained doorframes of the Passover, across the dry land of the Red Sea, and into the land flowing with milk and honey. The travelers witnessed God part the sea, rain down quail from heaven, scatter manna on the ground, and pour water from a rock. He guided them by a fire at night and a cloud by day. And yet, when it came time to march into the Promised Land, the land that was theirs for the taking, they faced a crisis of belief.

"Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites," God instructed Moses. So Moses sent twelve spies to scout out the land. When they returned, ten gave the following report:

"We went into the land where you sent us and it does flow with milk and honey!" they said. "But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large…We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are…The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size…We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them" (Numbers 13:27-33).

But two of the spies, Caleb and Joshua, believed God. "We should go up and take possession of the land," they said, "for we can certainly do it! If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." (Numbers 13:30, 14: 8, 9).

Guess whom the people believed? They believed the "evil report" - the ten men who did not believe God rather than the two men who did. God had already given them the land; the people simply had to move forward and posses it. But instead of moving into the Promised Land, they wandered in the desert for the rest of their lives. That entire generation of adults died in their unbelief, except for Caleb and Joshua.

But when the next generation came along, they believed God and moved into the Promised Land that their parents never saw. We can be just like that unbelieving generation - saved from slavery but wandering in the desert of unbelief. I have an acronym for fear: False Evidence Appearing Real. They only saw the giants, but failed to see Almighty God.

Oswald Chambers notes:

Human frailty is another thing that gets between God's words of assurance and our own words and thoughts. When we realize how feeble we are in facing difficulties, the difficulties become giants, we become like grasshoppers, and God seems to be non-existent. But remember God's assurance to us: "I will never …forsake you." Have we learned to sing after hearing God's keynote? Are we continually filled with enough courage to say, "The Lord is my Helper," or are we yielding to fear?

So here's my question to you. Whose report are you going to believe? Are you going to believe God's Word is true, or the enemy who tries to stop you from entering your own Promised Land because of fear?

Satan says, "You can't do it." God says, "I already have."

I don't want to be like those Israelites who didn't believe God. Do you? Are you going to move into the land flowing with milk and honey - take God's promises and make them yours? Or, are you going to believe the evil report and continue wandering around in the desert - free from slavery, but missing the Promised Land? Whose report are you going to believe?

Let's Pray
Dear LORD, forgive me for being like the Israelites who didn't believe You. Forgive me when I focus on the giants in the land rather than the giant-slayer. Today, I commit to take You at Your Word. I'm believing God today and moving forward to take the land You have already given me!

In Jesus' Name,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn
If you were listening to the two reports mentioned in today's devotion, which one would you have believed?

Hindsight is 20/20 and most of us would cheer, "I'd believe Joshua! I'd believe Caleb!" But I wonder. Do we believe God's promises even now?

What promises of God do you need to believe today?

Sometimes it is good to write them down. I'd love to hear your answers. Let's chat. Click on www.facebook.com/sharonjaynes to share your response.

Here is the Way, 3/31/2010

Here is the Way
Lynn Cowell

"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)

Devotion:
Should we say yes? It is seems like such a great opportunity. Besides, we deserve it, don't we? I mean, we never do anything for ourselves …

Once again, my mind is swirling with the pros and cons of the decision my husband and I face. I hear the things my mind is telling me…or is that my heart? Whether it is my mind or my heart, the real question is should I listen to it? Can I trust it?

Like most of you, I have been at this place before. The places of crossroads where choices are clear, but direction is not. The columns of "good" and "bad" on the paper don't seem to give us the answer we need. That is how logical people make decisions, isn't it? But it isn't working; so which way do we go?

My friend was recently running before sun-up. She was alone as her partner had run on ahead. She came across a patch of sidewalk where there were no street lights. It was dark and hard to see where to go ahead, and she began to feel afraid. "Lord, You are going to have to help me." she prayed. Then a car approached from behind, casting light onto her path. The closer it got, the clearer she could see. She sensed the Lord wanted her to know that just as He was with her when she was running, so in life He is behind her, shining light on her path and protecting her back.

Our key verse in Isaiah causes me to reflect on the whole decision-making process when trying to discern the right path. "…Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" But what about the voice we frequently hear, saying, "Follow your heart, it will never steer you wrong!" That voice is the voice from within, not the voice from behind.

Maybe some of you grew up memorizing verses like I did. Back then, so many of the verses didn't make sense to me. One in particular was Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (NIV). That seemed like a depressing verse! Yet now as an adult I am finally beginning to unpack the wisdom.

You see, we can't in fact follow our heart. Our heart can't be trusted. Our heart will lie to us and tell us things we want to hear instead of the truth we need to hear. It will convince us that what we want is the right way, even if that way is not God's way. I know; I've listened to it before.

When we find ourselves at the crossroads, the first place to turn is God's Word. So many of the questions we ask can be answered there if we are willing to hear the wisdom the Bible provides.

Open our ears, Lord, so we can hear Your voice behind us!

Dear Lord, I've grown so used to trusting my heart. In fact, it is all I've known to do most times. Please help me discern Your voice behind me and give me the discipline to read the wisdom You have already provided in Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Application Steps:
Are there decisions in your life you are in the process of making and haven't yet consulted the Lord? Take some time to talk with Him and use a concordance or BibleGateway to study and see what the Bible has to say about your delimma.

Ask another person who is further along in their faith if they are aware of any verses that have to do with the decision you need to make.

Reflections:
Have you made some decisions in the past you regret? Try to identify the emotion or motivation behind that decision.

What types of questions could you ask yourself in the future to help you prevent making the wrong decision? Some might be: Does this pathway glorify God? Would I be comfortable sharing this decision with others such as my parents, my children or my spouse? Will this decision take me in the direction I want to go?

Power Verses:
1 Kings 22:5, "But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, 'First seek the counsel of the LORD.'" (NIV)

Psalm 119:24, "Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors."(NIV)

Avoiding the Pits of Life, 3/29/2010

Avoiding the Pits of Life

Today's Truth

Proverbs 4:26-27 "Look straight ahead to what is good. Be careful what you do, and always do what is right. Don't turn off the road of goodness; keep away from evil paths" (NCV).

Friend To Friend

Life is filled with pits that come in all shapes and sizes, formed in many different ways by a variety of life circumstances. While a crisis or trial may very well be the covering of a pit in waiting, pits can also be shelter from a raging storm.

In the past, my first reaction to a threatening pit was usually fear, anger, whining or questioning the very presence of that pit. But I must confess that it was at the bottom of the deepest, darkest pit of my life where I met Holy God on His terms and was forever changed, my being totally redefined. Honestly, I would climb back down into that slimy, dark pit today because of what God accomplished through it. Some pits should not be avoided but embraced as evidence of God at work.

However, pits can also be the result of sin - a sin we refuse to relinquish, a wrong habit we cherish and love more than we love God. We should and can avoid these pits by making right choices. One of those choices is to guard our thoughts.

"Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life." Proverbs 4:23 (NCV)

Our thoughts dictate the direction of our lives. The greatest battlefield of life is the mind and we are constantly at war for its control! If we want to live right, we must think right because how we think affects how we live. Since everything we do or say originates with a single thought, minds filled with truth will produce lives filled with truth.

If our mind is not filled with truth, the enemy will pollute it with lies. John warns us that Satan is the King of Lies and the Prince of Pollution! "He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44 NIV) But what a great promise we find in Isaiah 26:3 "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!" (NLT) "Fixed" literally means "loyal or faithful" and portrays the idea of faithfulness, the same kind of faithfulness found in marriage.

In order to guard our thoughts, we must make the commitment of being married to the truth of God. The result and reward of faithfulness to the truth of God is the peace every mind craves and for which our desperate heart longs.

Polluted minds produce polluted lives.

What we allow to dwell in our minds will work its way out in our lives. However, pollution of the mind can only happen with our permission. The best way to prevent mind pollution is to run each thought through God's purification system. The word of God, our main weapon in mental warfare, reprograms the brain, trains the mind and filters input. We must set our minds and then guard that setting. It is the idea of placing a sentry at the entrance of the mind, empowering him to determine what comes in and what doesn't. It is giving up the control of our thinking processes to God.

We are quick to give the custody of our minds away to lesser things, to unworthy goals or desires and thoughts. If it is going on in the mind, it is real and often the first step toward the edge of a very dangerous cliff.

The story is told of an eagle perched on a block of ice just above Niagara Falls. The swift current carried the ice and the great eagle closer to the edge of the falls. Ignoring the warning cries of other birds and animals, the eagle boasted, "I have great and powerful wings. I can fly from my perch at any time. I can handle it."

Suddenly the edge of the falls was only a few feet away. The torrent of water carried the block of ice over the great falls. The eagle spread his powerful wings to mount up over the impending doom only to discover that it was too late. His claws had become frozen to the cake of ice.
Life is filled with casualties of undisciplined thinking. Satan stands in the shadows, laughing at the fallen children of God whose ravaged lives stand as monuments to the powerful kingdom of darkness.

In our arrogance, we foolishly believe we can handle a dangerous, mental flirtation with the base and immoral poison of foul movies, filthy books, depraved web sites or vain imaginings. Satan applauds the absence of accountability in our lives. He celebrates the flow of our thoughts toward the very sin nature that nailed Jesus Christ to the cross.

It's time to wake up!

Surrender your mind to God, my friend, asking Him to cleanse and purify every part. Then guard each thought as if your life depended on it. It does.

Let's Pray

Father, right now, I surrender my mind to You. Please purify and cleanse my thought life. Give me a thirst for Your truth and a broken heart when I sin against You in the way I think. I choose today to saturate my mind with the truth of Your Word.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

More From The Girlfriends

This week I have asked myself these questions:

Would I be embarrassed or pleased to have my thought life on display for everyone in my life to see?

What changes should I make?

Up until now, what has been the standard for outside sources affecting my thought life?

Will that standard please God?

Am I really willing to surrender my mind to God?
